Friends of The Library

The Friends of the Library of The Chathams are concerned citizens from both Chatham Borough and the Township of Chatham who want to help our Joint Library give the very best possible service to both communities. They raise money for books, materials, services, programs and improvements which the Library could not otherwise provide from municipal funds. They assist in promoting better use of the Library with projects such as art exhibits, home-reader service, storytimes, book sales and community events. They support the Board of Trustees and Library staff in efforts to keep our Joint Library responsive to the needs of the Chathams

The Friends are concerned citizens who raise money for books, materials, services, programs and improvements the library cannot provide through municipal funding. Friends promote the use of the library through art exhibits, story hours and events for children, reader service for the home-bound, the annual book sale and community events. They fill the bookstalls at the banks, post offices and train station and give away thousands of paperbacks each year in the stalls. The Friends along with the Town and Country Garden Club do all the landscaping in the front of the library. It is an active group and anyone interested in supporting the Library of the Chathams with their time, talent and resources by joining the Friends should call the Library at 973-635-0603.

Become a Friend of the Library of the Chathams
If you and your family enjoy the library and the programs and services presented at the library please become a friend. The annual membership drive to become a Friend of the Library of the Chathams has been mailed. The Friends board is asking residents of the Chathams to join or renew their memberships. Any contributions, large or small, help the Friends continue efforts to support Library programs and address needs of the Library of the Chathams located at 214 Main Street. A great benefit of being a Friend of the Library is that you receive an invitation to the Friends Preview Book Sale on the Friday night prior to the public book sale. This year the Friends preview sale is on Friday, March 8. It has become a highly anticipated annual social event!
We encourage all members to check with their employer's matching gift contribution programs. For questions about membership with the Friends of the Library please call the library at 973-635-0603.

- Celebrating 65 years of service-

The following Statement of Purpose for the Library of The Chathams was first read in 1950: "The purpose of the Friends of the Chatham Public Library (as it was called then) is:

1. To maintain an association of those interested in books.
2. To promote greater use of the library and to aid in its further development as a cultural center.
3. To focus attention on the needs of the library and to secure contributions that will meet those needs.
4. To support the Board of Trustees and Library Staff."

To this end, the Friends is still a group of concerned citizens from both Chatham Borough and the Township of Chatham who want to help our joint library give the very best possible service to both communities. We raise money for books, materials, services, programs, and improvements which the Library could not otherwise provide from municipal funds. We assist in promoting better use of the Library with projects such as art exhibits, home-reader services, storytimes, book sales and community events.
